The ancient Greek colony of Mesembria ( present - day Nesebar ) was one of the oldest cities alond the Bulgarian Black Sea coastin the remote antiquity. For millennia its large and hospitable harbour was one of the important stops in the itineraries of ships sailing in that region. Two hundred and twenty incised graffiti of ships have been discovered on the walls and facades of three of its churches, carved between the 14th and the 19th century.
